Poppies

5 x7 oil on canvas board

I have always loved the energy put out by a field of poppies. They appear so delicate as they blow in the wind.

Garlic Left On The Table

5" x 7" oil on canvas board

I find the history of the common fruits, vegetables and herbs that we use in our everyday cooking fascinating. When I started to search for information on Garlic I was well aware of its undisputed powers to ward off  EVIL, Who hasn't watched it used as a protection against Vampires in old films. I was surprised to find that the ancient Egyptians worshipped garlic and placed clay models of the bulb in Tutankhamen’s tomb. It was even used as currency.
The ancient Romans believed it was the herb of Mars, the ancient God of War. They thus chewed it during battles to strengthen them. I'm not sure I want to run around chewing a couple cloves of Garlic in order to become stronger.

Today it is available in almost all grocery stores. If your taste run to the unusual, many specialty stores carry some of the over 300 varieties found world wide. My favorite is the much milder flavored Elephant Garlic. The ability to find garlic almost everywherein the United States is a recent phenomina. Garlic was snubbed and frowned upon by so called food snobs in the United States until the early part of the twentieth century. It was relegated to ethnic foods and dishes, and found primarily in working class neighborhoods. By the mid twentieth century garlic was well recognized for its seasoning abilities and had taken its place as a major ingredient in may recipes.

In my next post "Ways To Eliminate the Pungent Odor Of Garlic" and "Tips On How To Grow Garlic" in your own back yard.

Till Next Time

The Journey Home

6" x 8" oil on stretched canvas

I came upon this photo as I was cleaning up. The brightness and spring like colors were so warming. Here I was staring out the windows of my studio, looking at another day of dull gray sky and light snow showers. The bright colors brought a smile and a sense of hope that spring would soon arrive. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did on such a dreary winter day.

Reflection

18" x 24" Oil on Stretched Canvas

Light reflecting off water has always stired within me a very personal, reflective state. Sitting on the beach or at the edge of a pond or lake watching the light dance across the waves is a meditating experience. It is at these times I do my deepest searching and thinking.

This piece is a little different than many of my other works. The darkness of the water intensified the colors of the light. Where I usually enjoy working with broad, lose brushstrokes for this type of setting I felt the need for more finely placed strokes. The finer strokes ntensifies the relationship between the colors in both the sky and water.

Nature will always do a better job than I have, but I am thrilled about the idea of getting to keep trying. I hope you enjoy this painting. If you are interested in purchasing this painting I can be contacted via my e-mail. Thank you S'anna

WINTER QUIET

16" x 20" oil on stretched canvas

This was one of the most pristine snow scenes I had encountered in a very long time. The snow had been falling most of the morning. It had been coming down so hard the birds had even stopped coming to the feeder. I had waited patiently through-out most of the morning, so I could be the first one to get to the snow. I wanted to get there before the children in the neighborhood hit the area with their sleds and toboggans.

Have you ever noticed how clean and quiet the world seems right after the snow falls. For a precious few moments the snow is untouched. The sun comes out and glistens ever so gently as it reflects off the small droplets of moisture.
It feels like you are the only one in this world.

Each season has its time of quiet, peaceful ,beauty. To me this is winters most perfect time. I hope you enjoy this painting. Anyone interested in purchasing this painting can contact me via my email. S'anna
